There are any number of ways to prevent a panic attacks from ever beginning. Those techniques can do wonders for anyone who wants to stop their panic in the long term. But what do you do when an attack has already started?
Below is a list of three things that you can do in the middle of a panic attack to help reduce the terror that it can cause and help you handle what’s happening.
1. Exercise
When a panic attack is in full swing, there is a rush of adrenaline that hits, making you shake and feel antsy. That adrenaline is zinging through your system, pumping your heart faster, sharpening your senses and sending more oxygen and nutrients to your muscles causing you to feel even more anxious.
If you want to reduce some the erratic terror that panic attacks cause, you need to get rid of some of this adrenaline.
So get up and move!
It you can, go for a walk, go for a run, go do some jumping jacks. The point is to get your body moving, not necessarily to get a great workout. You want your muscles working, your endorphins flowing and your body getting rid of some adrenaline.
Now sometimes exercise just isn’t practical during an attack. Like, say, in a meeting or on the bus. But any time you can get some extra physical exercise in those critical moments, do it.
2. Positive Triggers
Using positive triggers to counteract a panic attack can be really powerful. Positive Physical Triggers (or PPT for short) counteract your negative panic with a positive force that’s just as strong. Even if you don’t end up feeling happy, the two feelings will still cancel each other out.
Setting up these triggers takes a little time and involves repeating a certain gesture or physical movement when you feel upbeat and positive.
Just like hearing a certain song during happy times will cause a happy reaction when you hear the same song years later, the constant repeating of that physical movement will eventually cause you to feel those linked feelings of happiness days and years after the fact
Just imagine being able to feel an attack coming, perform your PPT and feel the feelings of joy and happiness you anchored wash over you and stop the attack.
3. The One Move Technique
The One Move technique was developed by Joe Barry and it’s something that he talks about in his book Panic Away. The technique is very unique as far as treatments for panic attacks go because it’s an entirely mental technique.
It doesn’t require any physical movement like positive triggers or exercise. It’s totally a cognitive technique that you do when you recognize that a panic attack is coming on.
Unfortunately I can’t tell you what the One Move is. Since Joe reveals the One Move technique in his book, I can’t give away his secret here, I don’t think that would be very nice.
But if you want to learn more about the One Move Technique or Panic Away itself you can read this full Panic Away review. It’s got lots of in depth information on curing panic attacks without medication.
