Am I having panic attacks?

I want to know how to recognize, I'm a psych major, I know the criteria and yet I think can not convince me. I had a series of tests last summer to remove all heart disease. Sometimes, apparently from nowhere, I go to physical discomfort in my body and slowly, slowly become chest pain on the left side and a feeling that I can not breathe the whole way. However, because I am aware of the symptoms, not hyperventilating, and trying to calm my breathing and thoughts. My hands are cold and I think the sweat. Without doubt these are panic attacks? If yes, what means non-therapy/medication related that contributed to the mastery of these?
