Bipolar disorder or manic depression, is a mental illness that causes mood swings and cycles of mood. CBT is a method of treatment of bipolar disorder is to teach the patient techniques to recognize triggers and symptoms of their mood cycling, and use of information and awareness to prevent the triggers from occurring, cyclothymia or be as serious. Most of these techniques require the patient to develop cognitive thinking and critical thinking and solving skills problems. If bipolar disorder is so severe that the patient can not participate in these thinking abilities and skills, CBT may not be a treatment viable itself.
