"The effect was much larger than expected, "said Sarina J. Grosswald, Ed.D., a specialist at George Washington University-cognitive learning and training principal investigator of the study. "The children also showed improvements in attention, working memory, organization and regulation of behavior. "
Grosswald said after the routine of meditation in the school started, "teachers indicated that they were able to teach more and students able to learn more because they were less stressed anxious. "
<b> Stress interferes with the ability to learn </ b>
Previous research shows ADHD children have a slower development of the brain and a reduced ability to manage stress. "Stress interferes with the ability of learning, the brain stops, "said William Stixrud, Ph.D., neuropsychologist Clinic Silver Spring, Maryland, and co-author of the study.
"The ADHD drug is very effective for some children, but it is marginal or ineffective for others. Even for children who show signs of improvement with drugs, the improvement is often accompanied by insufficient or troubling side effects, "said Stixrud." Almost Everyone has difficulty with attention, organize and do things under stress. So it goes without saying that the TM technique reduces stress and how brain organizes reduce symptoms of ADHD.
While in some cases, the child can not function without medication, it is increasingly concerned the risks and health effects associated with secondary ADHD drugs common market, including mood swings, insomnia, tics, slowing growth and heart problems. In 2006, the FDA required manufacturers to put warning labels on ADHD drugs, the list of any serious health risks.
These fears are high risk and the search engines for parents of alternatives that can be safer for their children.
The study was conducted in a private K-12 school for children with learning disabilities based on the language. Participation was limited to 10 students, aged 11-14, who were diagnosed with pre-existing ADHD. Approximately half Students were drugs. The students thought the school in a band for 10 minutes, morning and afternoon.
Determining the influence of the Transcendental Meditation technique at the beginning and the end of the period of three months, parents, teachers and students have completed Stock Assessment Measuring stress and anxiety, ADHD, behavioral and social skills, and executive functions. Students also had a series of performance tests to measure cognitive functioning.

"The medicine has helped, but had mixed results still loses focus, it had merged, and drugs affected his sleep and appetite, "said Andy, who lives with Daryl Washington DC" It has not done near its potential and we have not seen improvements. So at the end of the seventh grade, when her doctor recommended an increase in drugs we decided it was time to take a different course, stopping the medication and the use of transcendental meditation. "
"The results were quite remarkable," Daryl said. "Meditations twice daily smoothing things, gave his of view, and allows it to be more in control of their lives when things started to fall on the other. It took a while, but gradually changed how it handles the crisis and allowed it to be sure she could take bigger challenges in their own words "Climb mountain. "
"Everybody has noticed the change," added Andy.
Explained that the research Grosswald substantial showing the effectiveness of the TM technique for reducing stress and anxiety, and improve cognitive functioning in general population. "What is important to these new findings is that among children who have difficulties in concentration and attention, we see the same results. I do not require concentration, control the mind or disciplined. The fact that these children are able to MC, and show that this technique can easily be particularly suitable for children with ADHD, "he said.
This study was funded by Abramson Family Foundation and the Institute for community enrichment.
A second, completed TM-ADHD study recently with a control group measured the functioning of the brain using electroencephalography (EEG). Preliminary data show that three months of technical practice has resulted in significant positive changes in brain function during visual and motor skills. The changes have been observed particularly in the brain circuits involved in attention and concentration. After six months of TM practice, measures of distraction moved in the normal range.
